Advances in Pool Design, Technology and Safety Features

My name is Barbara, and I want to welcome you to my blog. In this space, I want to focus on one of my greatest loves - swimming pools. As a kid, I loved splashing in the creek that ran behind our home, and in high school, I was on the swim team. Although I cannot swim as often as I like, I still love swimming and swimming pools. I love reading and researching and decided to create a blog devoted to advances in pool design as well as pool technology and safety features. Please take a look at these posts. Thanks!

5 Reasons to Use Pool Cleaners In Winter

Your swimming pool may not get much, if any, use during the winter months. That's not a reason to close it up and forget about it. Weekly, biweekly, or monthly cleaning is still an important part of winter pool maintenance. There are several reasons why this is the case.

1. Keep It Hygienic

Unless you drain your pool for winter every year, the sitting water can become a magnet for bacterial and algal growth. Without regular cleaning, it becomes difficult to maintain the pool chemistry in a manner to prevent this unwanted growth. Regular winter cleaning and balancing of the pool environs and water can ensure your pool remains hygienic and doesn't become a health risk.

2. Avoid Equipment Failure

Cold temperatures in winter can damage pool equipment, including filters, heaters, and pumps. If you close up the pool and forget about it, equipment damage to the filter can go unnoticed and create a cascade effect that leads to damage to other equipment. Cleaning in winter also means equipment inspections are done regularly, thus ensuring problems are caught early when they are still easily repairable.

3. Prevent Maintenance Woes

It can be a nightmare to open up the pool in spring only to discover the sides are coated in algae stains and all of the filters need to be replaced. One way to avoid a major maintenance problem is to keep up with maintenance even when you aren't actively using the pool. There will be no need to close the pool for several weeks to drain it and scrub the sides if you managed to keep it clean all through winter.

4. Ensure Better Safety

A covered pool in winter may not seem like a huge safety concern, but there are a few hazards if you ignore the pool completely. Equipment can suffer electrical shorts, which can lead to fire risk. Another common issue is weight from dead branches and other debris collecting on the cover, thus causing it to sink beneath the water. When the cover can't support weight anymore, it becomes a drowning risk for any children or pets that may wander out onto it.

5. Increase the Pool Life

Damage often occurs when you aren't paying attention to the pool, which is common in winter. For example, cracks can form and be so progressed by spring that patching is all but impossible. If the pool is regularly cleaned through winter, these small problems are caught early, which in the long run will prolong the life of your pool. This saves you money and expense while ensuring the pool remains an enjoyable part of your home.
